Minsk diocese in the early 20-ies of the XX cen.: activities of the Metropolitan Melchizedek (Paevsky)

Abstract

Based on the achieves of the republic Belarus, of the Church and secular publications the article considers the Church life on the territory of the republic of Belarus in 20-ies of the XX cen., with due account of the activities of the Metropolitan Melchizedek (Paevsky) in the capacity of the head of the Minsk and Turovsk diocese. The author came to the conclusion that the course conducted by the Metropolitan Melchizedek in the sphere of state and Church policy served as an example for the subsequent hierarchs, in particular the metropolitan Panteleimon (Roznovsky), who headed the Minsk cathedra during the years of the fascist German occupation. This in turn is a serious confirmation of the correct course chosen by the Metropolitan Melchizedek aimed at preserving the Church peace and fidelity to canons of the Orthodox Church.
