Forming the Byzantine "codex of canons"

Abstract

Forming the Byzantine codex of the church law in the Orthodox Eastern Church is carried out in the conditions of the close interaction between the canonic power represented by the Patriarch of Constantinople and the patriarchal Synod and the secular power represented by the autocrat. The above circumstance makes us admit that the attempts to create a new Nomocanon of the Eastern orthodox Church must be made with due account of principles, laid down both in canonic rules and in the imperial Byzantium laws, adopted in their time by the authorized Church power. The core of the canonistic system of the eastern Orthodox Church is to be recognized Nomocanon XIV, titles and syntagma of the canons in the wording of the year 883. Alongside there is every need to take imperial Byzantium laws relative to Church to the extent to which they are able to correspond to the outstanding problems of the present day life within the framework of setting up a new nomocanon in the present epoch.
