Saint Katherine of Siena: phenomenon of "social mysticism"

Abstract

The article analyzes life and creative work of St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), one of the outstanding examples of so-called «social mysticism». St. Catherine?s personality is marked by a mixture of activity and contemplation, male and female, resolute determination and softness. St. Catherine was a theologian, public figure, politician, preacher, and, above all, a mystic. From the standpoint of genre, her letters combine aspects of the theological treatise, letter, and sermon.
