Project of setting up Church museum, submitted at the 1-st All-Russian conference on museums affairs in 1919: on the issue of history of relations between museum and Church

Abstract

On the bases of archival materials an attempt is made in the article to thoroughly consider one of the first projects in the history of Russia of the XX century to set up a Church museum submitted by famous art historian K.K. Romanov in 1919. Analyzing the debates unfolded around the project, the article ties them up with general discussion about the future development of museums in Russia, particularly its tough centralization. We analyze different views on this problem expressed by such cultural workers as N.N. Punin, P.P. Muratov, HJ. Marr and others. The initial phase in the relationships between museum and church - one of the most important component of the development of the Russian culture of the XXth is being clarified.
