Monotheism and the problem of depiction

Abstract

The attitudes towards depiction in the monotheistic religions are examined in the article. The idea of oneness of the act of divine creature and ontological otherness between the Creator and the created is inherent to these three. It means the principled impossibility to depict the God's image only, and to make a figurative representation in general. It is Christianity only that has become closely connected with the usage of sacred images. The author supposes that this is determined by the doctrine of the stereological Church as mystical Corpus Christi rather than other doctrines including the idea of the Incarnation.
