Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of school and book in the history of Halberstadt, a town in Saxony (Germany). In the Middle Ages several libraries were founded in Halberstadt. Learned clergy collected books and gave them to the town. The teachers of the parish schools did not only teach their pupils, but also took an active part in the life of the town and the diocese as lawyers. The collection of manuscripts, coming from Halberstadt, reflects various aspects of life in a medieval town.
