Hypocrite and his victim, a tragic turn (from "Canterbury stories" to "The village of Stepanchikovo")

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of relations of a hypocrite and his victim, which came into existence in the literature of the Middle Ages, and then they had the development in the literature of the following centuries. These relations are analyzed by example of works by Chaucer, Shakespeare, Moliere, Fielding, Dickens, as well as Dostoevsky, who reconsidered them in the novel “the village of Stepanchikovo” and its inhabitants”.
