Christology of Severus of Antioch

Abstract

The article (translation from English by deacon A. Urchenko) deals with the basic provisions of the Christological teaching of the founder of the oriental doctrine Severus, ex patriarch of Antioch (538), the comparison is made between the Christology of ancient Alexandrian and Antioch theological schools ( and with the neo-Nestorianism) and the teaching of John of Damascus, as well as modern Christological provisions of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. The Oriental Christological teaching in the interpretation of Severus appears before the reader's view in an unexpected way which strikes any orthodox imagination and which is symmetrical to the complex subjective understanding of Christ as a single sophisticated nature, complex Hypostasis and complex Image of God and Man as a certain tertium quid, formed de novo due to the natural, hypostases and prosophic mixture of two natures, two hypostasis and two persons, God and Man; all that is despite its incorrect monosubjective interpretation established over a millennium and a half on the part of the overwhelming majority of those adherent of different faiths ( Orthodox and Catholic) theologians of the past and of the present time. As a result a reproach with a certain « Monophysitism»is addressed against modern monohypostasis so-called Orthodox and Catholic Christological doctrines with an assertion in Christ a simple, deific Subject - God-Word
